How to Connect the First Generation Apple Pencil
We’ll start by showing you how to connect the first-generation Apple Pencil to your iPad. We will use a lightning connector because the first generation relies on it. To do so, follow the steps below:
1. Remove the back cap from your Apple Pencil to expose the lightning output.
2. Insert the Apple Pencil into the lightning connector on your iPad. It’s the same one you’ve been using to charge it.
3. A pop-up box similar to the one shown below will appear. Simply tap Pair and you’re finally finished!
As long as your iPad is not restarted, in Airplane mode, or connected to another iPad, the Apple Pencil will remain connected. If any of this occurs, simply repeat the steps above to reconnect it.
How to Connect the Apple Pencil 2nd Generation
Accordingly, the newer, more feature-rich 2nd generation Apple Pencil is actually easier to pair with an iPad. We’ll be using the magnetic connector on the iPad for this. Simply follow the steps outlined below:
- Using your Apple Pencil, attach it to the side of your iPad. The onboard magnetic connector will keep it in place.
- An Apple Pencil overlay will appear, along with a message instructing you to connect it to your iPad. Simply press the Connect button, and you’re done!
As you can see, connecting the 2nd generation Apple Pencil to the iPad is a breeze. Remember to repeat the previous steps if it becomes disconnected.
Can’t get the Apple Pencil to work with the iPad? Try These Suggestions
Don’t worry if you can’t connect either generation of Apple Pencil to your iPad. There’s a good chance you’re missing some obvious steps. Check out the tips we’ve provided below to ensure you’re not doing anything incorrectly.
1. Check that Bluetooth is turned on.
The Apple Pencil is dependent on a Bluetooth connection that must be kept active at all times. If you don’t use Bluetooth devices, you may have accidentally turned it off. To connect the Apple Pencil to your iPad, make sure Bluetooth is turned on. Turning on Bluetooth on your iPad is as simple as going to Settings > Bluetooth and toggling it on. Repeat this process.
2. Check that the Apple Pencil is charged.
As obvious as it may sound, you may have neglected to charge your Apple Pencil before connecting it to your iPad. Apple Pencil needs to be at least 50% charged before connecting it to the iPad. Continue reading to find out how to charge either generation of Apple Pencil.
3. Connector Damages
While the chances of this happening are extremely low, the lightning connectors on your Pencil or iPad may become damaged. To check for damage, simply close your eyes and inspect for any chipped metal on the Pencil’s output tip. Also, try shining a flashlight into the iPad’s lightning connector to see if anything has become lodged there. However, if there is, do not attempt to repair it yourself. You can take it to an Apple Repair Center right away.
4. Be careful not to insert the pencil the wrong way.
While the first-generation Pencil is simple to insert into the iPad, issues do arise from time to time. Do not force it if you are unable to connect the Pencil to your iPad due to a damaged side or because it does not fit all the way in. If you’re having trouble with the Pencil or the iPad, take both devices to an Apple Store and ask the executives for assistance. Failure to do so may result in costly damage to your devices.
Have Fun by Connecting Your Apple Pencil to Your iPad
That’s how you easily connect your Apple Pencil to your iPad. Although the first-generation Apple Pencil is simple to pair, the new second-generation Apple Pencil makes pairing even simpler and more seamless.
