I Refused to Share My Son’s Inheritance — Am I a “Bad Mother”?

Financial matters frequently serve as a source of discord within families, and the strain can be particularly pronounced in blended families. Harper encountered a difficult predicament when her eldest son, from a prior marriage, was designated to receive a significant inheritance from his deceased father. In light of this, she chose to share her experience and seek guidance on how to address this delicate situation.

This is Harper’s letter:
My former spouse has passed away, leaving our 15-year-old son with an inheritance of $300,000, which I will oversee until he reaches the age of 18. I also have a 12-year-old son from my second marriage, and my husband wishes to allocate a portion of that inheritance for our younger son’s education.

I declined his request. He responded, “What kind of mother are you? You favor the wealthy child and neglect the less fortunate one!” I opted not to respond.
