Retired teacher’s honest words to parents go viral

In 2017, former educator Lisa Roberson published an open letter in the Augusta Chronicle that ignited a discussion regarding the condition of the education system. Roberson contended that the issue lies not with teachers, as is frequently suggested, but rather with parents. She expressed concern that many parents fail to instill values of respect, manners, and responsibility in their children. Notably, she observed that while some students arrive at school wearing expensive footwear, they often do not possess essential supplies such as pencils and paper, which teachers are then compelled to provide.

Roberson also raised the question of whether parents actively participate in their children’s education by engaging with teachers, attending parent nights, or ensuring that homework is completed. She asserted that if parents were to take greater responsibility, the education system would see significant improvement. Her letter prompted critical reflections on the role of parents in education and continues to stimulate dialogue on how to effectively tackle challenges within the school system.
