«A 32-year-old woman who jumped into a polar bear enclosure at the Berlin Zoo was attacked by a polar bear.»

Mandy K, 32, was attacked by a polar bear on Friday at the Berlin Zoo after she entered the enclosure during feeding time. To gain access, she climbed over a wall, a series of bushes, and a fence.

As she leaped into the enclosure, the bear assaulted her, resulting in severe injuries to her arms, legs, and back. Six zookeepers attempted to divert the attention of the four bears, but one bear “repeatedly bit the victim on the arms and legs.” After successfully scaring the bear away, the zookeepers managed to rescue Mandy.

She underwent surgery to treat her injuries and is now recovering in the hospital.

A zoo spokesperson expressed concern regarding the incident, emphasizing the inherent dangers and the challenges faced by zookeepers during the rescue operation. It was later revealed that Mandy, a teacher, had been feeling despondent due to her struggles in finding employment. This incident has raised important discussions about mental health and the challenges individuals face in high-stress situations.

Zoo officials are currently reviewing security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. They urge visitors to remain aware of the potential dangers of approaching wild animals and to respect the established barriers.
