Agnetha Faltskog became a superstar with ‘ABBA’ – better sit down before you see her today, age 74
ABBA is widely recognized today as one of the most iconic bands in music history. The Swedish quartet continues to enjoy global superstardom. However, one of its members, Agnetha Faltskog, has opted for a life away from the limelight.
Faltskog, along with Anni-Frid Lyngstad, served as one of the primary vocalists for ABBA. With her exceptional pop voice, she captivated audiences, inspiring them to dance with some tracks while evoking deep emotions with others. Above all, she emerged as one of the most intriguing music icons of her era, alongside her bandmates.
Currently, Faltskog leads a tranquil life in Sweden, yet she remains active in music production. At the age of 74, she continues to look remarkable. It is rare to find someone who has not heard of ABBA. Whether one experienced their performance of “Waterloo” live or was born decades later, children today likely dance with the same enthusiasm as previous generations when they hear the band’s songs.
ABBA – global icons
Choosing a single favorite ABBA song is nearly impossible, which contributes to their status as worldwide superstars; there exists an ABBA song for every occasion, whether it be joyful, melancholic, uplifting, or reflective.
A distinctive aspect of ABBA is that all members largely withdrew from public view after the group disbanded. While they continued to create music, they preferred to lead quieter lives away from the public eye, a choice that Agnetha Faltskog certainly embraced.
What transpired in her life after ABBA’s dissolution? How did she initially become part of the group? This is the remarkable journey of Agnetha Faltskog. Born on April 5, 1950, in Jönköping, Sweden, she was the eldest of two daughters of Knut Ingvar Fältskog, who worked in a department store, and Birgit Margareta Johansson.
Agnetha Faltskog – early careerFrom an early age, Agnetha Faltskog exhibited a keen interest in music. Among her favorite artists were Tom Jones, Petula Clark, and Dusty Springfield, and she undoubtedly possessed considerable talent.
At the tender age of five, Faltskog composed her first song, which featured two small “trolls.” She frequently visited her neighbor’s home to play the piano and began formal lessons at the age of eight. Additionally, she participated in the local church choir.
In 1960, when she was just 13 years old, Faltskog formed a band called The Cambers with two of her childhood friends. They performed at small venues within their community, but two years later, she felt the need to pursue new opportunities.
Agnetha then joined the Swedish folk music group Bernt Enghardt, which toured Sweden performing traditional dance music. “They had a singer named Agneta before me who left,” Agnetha recalled. “They had put up posters seeking a new vocalist, and when they discovered me after my audition, it was a significant advantage that I shared the name Agnetha.” While touring with Bernt Enghardt, Faltskog also worked as a telephonist for a car company, but her circumstances were far from ideal.
Debuting at 17
She often returned home late, around 2 or 3 in the morning, only to be expected at work a few hours later. On one occasion, she even fainted at her job, prompting her mother to issue an ultimatum.
“‘You can either work like a regular person or fully commit to singing,’” Agnetha recalled her mother saying. “It wasn’t a difficult decision; I wanted to continue singing.”
Agnetha remained with the Bernt Enghardt band for two years before embarking on a solo career. It was during the release of her first solo album that she chose to add an “h” to her surname.
At 17, Faltskog released her debut single, “Jag var så kär” [I Was So In Love], which quickly ascended to the top of the Swedish sales chart in 1968. Shortly thereafter, a man named Björn Ulvaeus heard her song on the radio.I do not consider myself to be particularly enigmatic.
Agnetha Faltskog’s decision to withdraw from the public eye has often been perceived as mysterious. Nevertheless, she herself finds this characterization frustrating.
“I have often been labeled as very mysterious, but that is not the case,” she stated in an interview with The Guardian. “I believe I am simply very down-to-earth. My life encompasses many aspects; I have my children, my grandchildren, my two dogs, and a large home in the countryside. I lead my own life.”
Agnetha is now a grandmother to three grandchildren, who are still largely unaware of her illustrious past as a global icon.
“I spend a significant amount of time with my grandchildren,” Faltskog shared. “They enjoy singing with me, and it’s wonderful to hear their voices; they truly can sing. I don’t often discuss ABBA or my past with them, but as they grow older, they will become more informed. The eldest, Tilda, is already starting to learn a bit more.”
According to The Guardian, Agnetha Faltskog’s net worth is estimated to be around $20 million, a figure that may rise soon with rumors of an ABBA reunion.
ABBA is set to release new music.
Faltskog’s most recent album was released in 2013, but Bjorn Ulvaeus has announced that new ABBA tracks are forthcoming.
“There will definitely be new music this year; it’s no longer a possibility, it is a certainty,” Ulvaeus informed the Herald Sun. “We are very close friends. The four of us stood in the studio together for the first time in 40 years, and there’s a unique understanding of what we have experienced together. It’s difficult to articulate, but the bonds between us are incredibly strong.”
I have a deep admiration for Agnetha Faltskog’s voice. She was an exceptional talent, and I sincerely hope to see her perform live again soon.
