Boy, 5, survives savage attack by two dogs only to be called a ‘monster’ in public

At the tender age of five, young Ryder Wells has endured more trauma than many experience throughout their entire lives. Defying all expectations, this brave child from North Carolina survived a vicious attack by two rottweilers during a family visit for Thanksgiving in 2015.
At merely 21 months old, Ryder was assaulted by the two 100-pound dogs, resulting in the loss of half of his face, crushed teeth, a broken arm, and a punctured lung. His family feared for his survival, yet this resilient boy persevered, undergoing approximately 50 surgeries since the incident.
Rather than receiving commendation for his remarkable recovery, Ryder faces unkind remarks from both children and adults. His teaching assistant noted that even adults would gawk at him when he first entered school.
“When we visit the park, there is a child who points and yells ‘monster’ at him before fleeing,” his mother, Brittany, recounted, as reported by The Mirror. “Recently, while shopping, someone shouted ‘ew’ at him. It is painful and heartbreaking as a parent to witness such behavior after all he has endured. However, he is a true fighter and does not allow anything to hinder his spirit.”
Ryder’s survival is often referred to as a ‘miracle,’ as even medical professionals had doubts about his recovery. Now, his 31-year-old mother from Granite Falls harbors fears about her son starting school.
“He wears glasses and a cap, and at times, he lowers his head to conceal his face. I remind him daily that he is beautiful, that being different is beautiful, and that it is perfectly acceptable to be unique. I provide him with as much reassurance as possible, but I am genuinely anxious about his school experience. There will always be a few children who may not be kind.”
She aims to raise awareness regarding the impact of bullying on individuals with facial disfigurements, hoping that Ryder’s story will encourage others to reconsider their treatment of those who appear different.
It is essential to educate our children to embrace diversity and to show kindness, thereby supporting individuals like Ryder in leading the joyful lives they rightfully deserve.
