George Armitage, the esteemed filmmaker known for his work on Grosse Pointe Blank and Miami Blues, has passed away at the age of 82.

His niece confirmed to TMZ that Armitage died last Saturday, surrounded by his family, which included his wife, son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren.

The specific cause of death has not been disclosed.

As a director and screenwriter adept at merging elements of crime and comedy, Armitage gained recognition with the 1997 cult classic Grosse Pointe Blank, featuring John Cusack as a hitman attending his high school reunion.

He also directed the 1990 dark comedy Miami Blues, which showcased Alec Baldwin in one of his most notable early performances.
