Cryonic preservation: 50 years
Dr. James Hiram Bedford, a professor and veteran of World War I, was the first individual to undergo cryonic preservation following his death in 1967 due to metastatic kidney cancer.
Motivated by Dr. Robert Ettinger’s publication, The Prospect of Immortality, Bedford made arrangements to be frozen after his demise. His body was preserved in liquid nitrogen at a temperature of -196°C.
Years later, Alcor conducted an examination of his remains and discovered that they were remarkably well-preserved, with his facial appearance appearing younger than anticipated.
Over 50 years later, Bedford continues to exist in cryonic suspension, having expressed optimism that future generations would ultimately benefit from advancements in science.
