Dad Fatally Beats Man…
In 2018, Melvin Harris, a 41-year-old father residing in Phoenix, entered a guilty plea for manslaughter following an altercation that resulted in a man’s death. Initially charged with second-degree murder, Harris asserted that his actions were motivated by a desire to protect his daughter.
The incident occurred on August 2, 2018, when Harris arrived at a QT convenience store located near 19th and Dunlap Avenues. His daughter, who had been in the restroom, informed him that a man had attempted to force his way into her locked stall. Store security personnel subsequently escorted the individual, identified as Leon Armstrong, outside, where Harris’ daughter identified him. Harris then communicated with the security guard, indicating his intention to address the matter personally.
Witnesses reported observing Harris strike Armstrong, causing him to fall to the ground, and continue the assault before departing the scene. Armstrong suffered a traumatic brain injury and succumbed to his injuries a few days later.
This case, which was initially reported in November 2019, underscores the tragic outcomes that can arise from a father’s instinct to protect his child when it escalates into violence.
