Florida State Senator Dies After Complications From Knee Replacement Surgery

Florida state Democratic Senator Geraldine Thompson passed away on Thursday at the age of 76 due to complications arising from knee replacement surgery.

Thompson was a passionate advocate for education, healthcare, and civil rights, playing a key role in the establishment of the Wells’Built Museum of African American History and Culture in Orlando. She represented the Florida Legislature from 2006 until 2022, serving notably as the vice chair of the Appropriations Committee on Pre-K-12 Education. On a national level, Democratic Senators Tina Smith of Minnesota and Gary Peters of Michigan have announced their intentions not to seek re-election in 2026. Smith has expressed a desire to spend more time with family, while Peters, after serving two terms in the Senate, aims to make way for the next generation, resulting in a competitive Senate seat in Michigan.
