This courageous individual endured third-degree burns across his entire face and scalp, leading him to wear a baseball cap, sunglasses, and prosthetic ears in public for many years. He recounted how children would flee at the sight of him. However, his life took a remarkable turn in 2015 when he underwent the most extensive face transplant ever performed.

Reports indicated that Hardison had a 50% chance of surviving the face transplant. Nevertheless, the surgery, which lasted 26 hours and involved over 100 medical professionals divided into two teams, was successful. Today, Patrick Hardison enjoys life with his cherished wife and children.

In 2015, a significant milestone occurred in the United States when Patrick Hardison became the first American to receive this groundbreaking procedure.

As a devoted father, Patrick actively participated in his children’s sports events and cherished family time. As a volunteer firefighter, he consistently sought ways to assist his community. However, in 2001, a single day would alter the lives of him and his family forever.

Patrick responded to a house fire, where he suffered severe burns to his face, neck, and upper torso. The fire also resulted in the loss of his ears, lips, most of his eyelid tissue, and a significant portion of his nose.It appeared that he was fated to endure a life where children would flee from him and parents would murmur and point. However, in 2015, the most extensive face transplant ever conducted became a reality.

Patrick faced a daunting 50/50 chance of survival due to the procedure’s complexity. Today, he possesses a completely new face and looks nothing short of remarkable. Here is an overview of the astonishing journey of Patrick Hardison.

Originally from Mississippi, Patrick Hardison served as a volunteer firefighter earlier in his life. In 2001, he responded to a house fire, which led to a tragic accident.

“My mask was melting to my face,” Hardison recounted. “My hose had already melted.”

He managed to escape through a window, but by then, his head and upper body were engulfed in flames, resulting in devastating injuries.

“For someone in our profession, I’ve never witnessed anyone so severely burned who was still alive,” recalled his friend and fellow first responder, Jimmy Neal, upon seeing Hardison after the incident.

The father suffered third-degree burns across his entire face and scalp, along with facial burns affecting his head, neck, and upper torso. The fire also resulted in the loss of his ears, lips, most of his nose, and a significant portion of his eyelid tissue.

“I didn’t actually see my reflection until around November. I was injured in September,” Hardison shared with Fox News. “They had created a small opening in one of my eyelids because everything was covered with skin grafts. When I looked in the mirror, all I could think was, ‘Is this it? I can’t live like this,’” he recalled.

A new chapter awaited Hardison. He underwent 71 surgeries and numerous other procedures, yet he still struggled to express normal facial emotions. Patrick was unable to eat or laugh without experiencing pain, and he could not even blink or close his eyes.Surgeons ultimately succeeded in stitching together skin flaps to safeguard his vision. Nevertheless, he remained at a significant risk of gradually losing his sight.

As time passed, Patrick struggled to come to terms with his appearance. Simply being around his children—or even alone—became a distressing experience. People would stare, and his children were often frightened. He felt he had lost all hope of leading a normal life. Patrick consistently wore a baseball cap and sunglasses, along with specially crafted prosthetics to replace his ears.

“I had children. It was an incredibly challenging period. I never had a moment’s respite from the injury. Every time I stepped outside, it was a daily ordeal. It’s hard to articulate everything,” he reflected.

“When you go to the ballpark, you have to brace yourself for the child who might run off screaming.”

For years, Patrick endured both physical pain and the stares of onlookers as he walked down the street. He began to lose faith in the possibility of living a typical life and feared that his disfigured appearance would be a lifelong burden. However, advancements in surgical techniques for face transplants emerged over time. In 2005, Isabelle Dinoire became the first individual to undergo a face transplant. Despite this progress, Hardison had lost hope of receiving the assistance he so desperately needed.

Then, unexpectedly, a friend discovered Dr. Eduardo D. Rodriguez at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York, who had experience with face transplants. This initiated a search for a suitable donor for Patrick.

After a year of searching, only two potential donors were identified. The first was a good match, but the tissue profile did not align. The second candidate appeared promising, yet his family ultimately chose to withdraw him from consideration.

Just as Hardison was resigning himself to the possibility of never receiving a face transplant, another potential donor emerged. LiveOnNY, a nonprofit organization that facilitates organ donations in the New York area, had located a new opportunity.Following the passing of David, his mother, Nancy Millar, made the decision to donate her son’s organs, which included his liver, heart, and kidneys. Significantly, she also chose to donate his face.

“I insisted, ‘You must preserve his face. He has the face of a porcelain doll.’ We had discussed organ donation, and he was a donor,” Millar shared with People.

When she learned about Patrick and the potential for him to receive a face transplant, she acted without hesitation. For her, this represented an opportunity for David’s legacy to continue.

“Upon meeting Patrick, I recognized a strength in him—a robust, manly energy reminiscent of David,” she reflected.

“David aspired to be a firefighter, and I understood that if this man was willing to enter a fire to save others, risking his own life, then he possessed the same strength that David had.”

Dr. Eduardo D. Rodriguez gathered a team of 100 medical professionals, including doctors, nurses, and support staff, to prepare for Hardison’s surgery. This operation marked the most extensive soft tissue face transplant ever conducted, lasting an impressive 26 hours.

The medical team provided Hardison with a new face, scalp, ears, and ear canals, along with sections of bone from his chin, cheeks, and entire nose. Additionally, Patrick received new eyelids, restoring his ability to blink naturally.

However, the surgery came with significant risks. Due to the complexity of the procedure, Patrick faced only a 50/50 chance of survival.

“Every aspect of life carries risk,” Hardison remarked to Time Magazine.

“When your time comes, it will come—whether you are walking down the street and get struck by a vehicle or lying on the operating table.”
