If you spot this insect in your yard, you had better know what it is

The emergence of social media has facilitated the rapid dissemination of information, which can be a significant advantage. This capability allows warnings about potential hazards to circulate swiftly, theoretically enhancing our safety. A few years ago, a notable warning was shared by a mother whose son developed an unusual red, grid-like mark on his skin after gathering tree branches. Shortly thereafter, he was taken to the emergency room. Andrea Pergola aims to raise awareness about a matter that could potentially save lives.

While participating in volunteer work, Andrea’s 15-year-old son, Logan, experienced a sudden sharp pain from an insect sting. Within moments, a red grid-like mark appeared on his arm, which quickly escalated into a severe rash. The rash extended from his arm to his chest, accompanied by intense burning pain. Additionally, Logan began to feel dizzy and appeared pale. In an effort to alleviate the symptoms, his mother washed the affected area and applied garlic, a common remedy for insect stings. However, her attempts proved ineffective.

It was Logan’s grandfather who identified the insect responsible for the sting. He carefully captured it using thick gloves and examined it more closely. The creature turned out to be a caterpillar, described as both “cute” and fuzzy, yet it is one of the most venomous caterpillars found in North America. After conducting online research, Andrea realized the urgency of taking Logan to the emergency room.

“Please research this caterpillar, be aware of it, and inform your children,” Andrea posted on Facebook. “Although it is not native to Florida, it has made its way here from Texas. If you or your child is stung, seek immediate medical attention. I can assure you that we were unaware of the multiple stings Logan had sustained, and standard over-the-counter Benadryl would not have sufficed for treatment at home.”
