LA fires double tragedy after amputee dad tried to wait for ambulance for disabled son: Latest victims named

The wildfires in Los Angeles have tragically resulted in the deaths of Anthony Mitchell, a 67-year-old amputee, and his son Justin, who lived with cerebral palsy. Anthony, who used a wheelchair, chose to stay behind to protect his son. His daughter, Hajime White, stated, “No matter what,” he was determined not to leave his son. Unfortunately, they were unable to escape the advancing flames, and their remains were later found in Altadena.

At least ten fatalities have been reported due to the fires, with authorities cautioning that this number may rise as identification efforts continue. The LA medical examiner indicated that the condition of the remains necessitated the use of DNA and dental records for identification. Sheriff Robert Luna emphasized the challenges faced by emergency responders, citing ongoing gas leaks and sporadic fires.

Victor Shaw, aged 66, was another victim who perished while trying to save his family’s 55-year-old residence. His sister, Shari, recounted her desperate pleas for him to evacuate. “I had to save myself when I went back in and called his name, but he didn’t answer.” Similarly, 82-year-old Rodney Nickerson lost his life after opting to stay in his Altadena home, believing the fire would subside.

These wildfires have become the most devastating in Los Angeles history, having ravaged over 34,000 acres. Notable figures such as Paris Hilton and Anthony Hopkins have also lost their homes. Authorities are requesting patience as the search continues, with the sheriff warning that “the true extent of the devastation will take time to reveal.”
