My DIL Disobeyed My House Rules — I Made Her Regret It

Everyone is required to contribute a homemade dish to my annual family gathering. This year, my daughter-in-law, attending for the first time, opted to bring a store-bought item, remarking, “My time is valuable; I’m not a stay-at-home mom like you!” I chose not to respond.

Considering her dish was not homemade, I assumed she would not mind using paper plates, so I placed disposable plates next to her dish during dinner.

I believed this would be considerate, understanding her busy schedule. I remarked, “It’s not merely about having time; it’s about prioritizing and demonstrating respect for our family,” as she began to cry and attempted to justify her choice.

Subsequently, my son accused me of disrespecting his wife and demanded that I publicly apologize. I refused. It has been a week since I last heard from them. Did I overreact?
