Father who murdered 10-year-old daughter is attacked in prison
The tragic and harrowing murder of 10-year-old Sara Sharif reverberated around the world, inciting widespread indignation towards her father, Ufran Sharif, who admitted to the brutal slaying of his daughter.
However, the narrative extends beyond the “campaign of torture” that culminated in Sara’s demise. The specifics of this tragedy are profoundly unsettling. While incarcerated, news rapidly spread regarding Ufran’s identity, leading to a violent confrontation with other inmates who took it upon themselves to deliver their own form of justice.
On August 8, 2023, the global community was devastated as the story of Sara Sharif, a vibrant and affectionate 10-year-old, emerged in the news.
The young girl endured a horrific ordeal, described as being hooded, burned, and beaten over a “campaign of torture” that persisted for two years before her remains were discovered at the family residence in Woking, Surrey, as reported by the BBC.
Upon the police’s arrival at the home, they discovered Sara in a bunk bed alongside a confession letter, confirmed to be penned by her father. The note stated: “Whoever sees this note, it’s me Urfan Sharif who killed my daughter by beating. I am running away because I am scared.”
He further claimed, “I swear to God that my intention was not to kill her. But I lost it,” before indicating he would “be back before the postmortem.”
Equally alarming is the fact that Ufran and two other family members fled to Pakistan the day prior to the discovery of Sara’s body.
After an extensive international manhunt for those accountable for her tragic death, Sara’s uncle, Faisal Malik, 29, her father, 42, and stepmother, Beinash Batool, 30, were subsequently charged.
In court, it was revealed that Sara had sustained over 70 injuries, including damage to her ribs, shoulder blades, fingers, and 11 fractures to her spine, along with a puncture wound to her head, a traumatic brain injury, and a burn on her buttock.
Following the arrest, the three individuals maintained their innocence; however, during the court proceedings, Urfan altered his statement and confessed, “she died because of me.”
On December 17, 2024, Sharif was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 40 years, while Batool received a life sentence with a minimum of 33 years. During the sentencing, Mr. Justice Cavanagh characterized their actions as “a campaign of torture,” emphasizing that “the degree of cruelty involved is almost inconceivable.” Malik was sentenced to 16 years for causing or permitting the death of a child.
Olga Domin, the birth mother of Sara, provided a statement that was read in court. She referred to the three suspects as “sadists,” adding, “Even this term does not suffice. I would label you as executioners.”
She then addressed her daughter, stating, “She is now an angel watching over us from heaven. She is free from violence.”
The inmate code
Upon his entry into prison, Sharif confronted the grim reality of cohabiting with hardened criminals. It is commonly understood that those convicted of murder adhere to a specific code that condemns crimes against children.
Urfan’s notoriety as a child murderer sealed his fate, and accounts of his crime spread throughout the prison, marking him as a target.
In an interview with the Sun, a source revealed that since his arrival at South London’s HMP Belmarsh, often referred to as Britain’s Guantanamo Bay, “Sharif has attempted to remain inconspicuous.”
“However, news of his identity quickly circulated… Inmates were displeased that he was among them, and despite the heinous nature of their own crimes, many do not tolerate those who harm children.”
On New Year’s Day, just weeks into his life sentence, two inmates who were “appalled by his abuse of Sara” attacked Urfan with a jagged lid from a tuna can.
Urfan sustained severe injuries in his cell at the hands of two assailants who entered with intent. The attack was premeditated, utilizing a makeshift weapon fashioned from a tuna can lid. He suffered lacerations to his neck and face and remains in healthcare, in critical condition, according to an insider’s account regarding the child killer who endured the assault.
The individual noted, “He was fortunate to survive, but he required stitches and will bear scars as a lasting reminder of the incident. The guards made efforts to ensure his safety, as he clearly became a target following the extensive media coverage of his case.”
The source further remarked, “An incident like this was always a possibility, and an attack was likely just a matter of time… Many inmates are expressing that it could not have happened to a more deserving individual.”
Recent allegations suggest that one of Ufran’s attackers is inmate Steve Sansom, who is serving a life sentence for the murder and dismemberment of Sarah Mayhew in 2024. Additionally, Sansom was convicted in 1999 for the murder of cab driver Terrence Boyle.
