Pregnant teen refuses cancer treatment and dies a few months after he does – help us pay tribute
Life can be remarkably beautiful at times, yet it can also be profoundly cruel. This duality contributes to the journey of existence, characterized by its inherent unpredictability.
At the age of 18, Brianna Rawlings was 17 weeks pregnant and eagerly anticipating motherhood when she received a devastating diagnosis.
Doctors identified her condition as NK cell leukemia, a rare and aggressive form of blood cancer. Prior to this diagnosis, her symptoms had been dismissed by medical professionals as merely related to her pregnancy.
As she approached the midpoint of her pregnancy, Brianna faced a heart-wrenching decision: to terminate her pregnancy and begin treatment that could potentially save her life, or to continue with her pregnancy, hoping for a healthy future for her child while forgoing treatment. Ultimately, she chose to prioritize bringing her son into the world. Tragically, this decision led to the loss of both mother and child.
Her son, Kyden, lived for only 12 brief days, enveloped in love that would last a lifetime, yet he succumbed to complications from being born three months premature. Brianna developed a blood infection, prompting doctors to perform an emergency C-section to protect the baby.
In an interview with Femail, as reported by the Daily Mail, Brianna expressed, “Those 12 days I was able to spend with my baby boy Kyden, holding him, counting his toes and fingers and talking to him like I would when he was in my tummy. They were just so special; they were the best 12 days of my life.”
It has been an incredibly challenging, prolonged, and painful journey, she expressed. “Although Kyden is no longer with us, he provided me with the strength to persevere and confront this battle.
“My goal is to overcome this dreadful illness. I am confident in my ability to succeed, and I made a vow to my son.” Initially, it appeared that Brianna was on the path to recovery.
Her blood levels had started to improve, and she was pushing herself to the limit in an effort to regain the use of her leg muscles.
Regrettably, her situation took a turn for the worse. Her health began to decline, leading doctors to cancel the scheduled bone marrow transplant from her brother.
In its place, they introduced her to an experimental medication that they hoped would enhance her chances of survival. Despite the exorbitant cost of $3,000 per week for the treatment, her family successfully raised the necessary funds to ensure she could undergo a continuous regimen.
Unfortunately, they were only able to complete two rounds of the medication before cancer claimed her life.
Brianna Rawlings, just 19 years old, succumbed to leukemia on December 29, 2018. Nevertheless, she fought valiantly and ultimately departed with a level of dignity that few can aspire to achieve.
This serves as a profound testament to the deepest love one can possess.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Brianna Rawlings. She was truly an extraordinary individual who fought tirelessly for her child.
