Russia releases statement after Trump reads out Zelensky’s letter

Russia has recently made a statement in light of the evolving dynamics concerning the United States’ relationship with Ukraine. This comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was in the United States, where a tense interaction occurred in President Donald Trump’s Oval Office.

A representative from the Kremlin has now commented on the situation, indicating Russia’s position on the matter.

A spokesperson from the Kremlin addressed President Zelensky’s willingness to engage in negotiations following President Trump’s reading of a letter from Zelensky before Congress.

Last week, President Trump and Vice President JD Vance convened with Zelensky to discuss various issues, with the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia being the primary focus.

Tensions escalated during the meeting as Trump and Vance expressed their dissatisfaction with Zelensky’s perceived lack of appreciation and his hesitance to pursue ceasefire discussions with Russia. “You’re gambling with the lives of millions of people,” Trump remarked. “You’re gambling with World War Three, and what you’re doing is highly disrespectful to this country, which has supported you more than many have said it should,” he added.

Trump subsequently declared a suspension of all military assistance to Ukraine, a decision that Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov characterized as the “best contribution to the cause of peace.”

After leaving the White House, Zelensky sent a letter to President Trump, which he presented to Congress on March 4, 2025. In this correspondence, Zelensky expressed, “Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible.”

He further stated, “My team and I are prepared to work under President Trump’s strong leadership to achieve lasting peace,” while also conveying appreciation for America’s support in helping Ukraine uphold its sovereignty and independence. The correspondence also indicated Ukraine’s willingness to finalize an agreement concerning rare earth minerals at a time that suits the United States, a deal that was initially planned during President Zelensky’s challenging visit to the White House.

“It is imperative to bring this senseless conflict to a close. To achieve peace, dialogue must occur with both parties,” stated President Trump. Moscow seems to acknowledge Ukraine’s readiness to engage in negotiations, as Peskov remarked, “We are optimistic. The issue lies in determining who will be present at the negotiating table.”

Nevertheless, he conveyed some hesitation regarding the potential developments, given Ukraine’s 2022 decree that prohibits discussions with Russian President Putin.

“At present, the legal restriction imposed by the Ukrainian President on engaging with the Russian side remains in place,” the statement clarified.

“Overall, the sentiment is positive, but the specifics have yet to change,” the statement concluded.

Sky News reported that Russia’s offensive against Ukraine persists. On March 4, 2025, Russian forces executed a drone strike on the southern Ukrainian city of Odesa, resulting in the death of a 77-year-old woman and injuries to three others.

Regional governor Oleh Kiper confirmed that the woman succumbed to shrapnel injuries on the city’s outskirts, with the drones causing damage to a private residence and igniting fires.

In retaliation to the 181 drones launched by Russia, Ukraine successfully intercepted 115.

The situation continues to evolve, and it remains uncertain how events will progress. What are your perspectives on the matter? Please share your thoughts in the comments to engage with others.
