Spring Equinox: Exploring The Science And Significance Of The First Day Of Spring

Overview:

Spring Season marked its first day in 2023 today 20 March 2023 but you know what is the meaning of spring? The earth still sits on an angle axis and travels around the sun. So basically, the sunlight falls differently on the southern halves and northern halves of the planet.

If we talk about the equinox, then the Earth will not angle towards or away from the sun. Both southern and northern will get an equal amount of sunlight in day and night or about the same length. For the north of the equator, the spring days become longer until the summer will solstice in June.

What is Spring Equinox?

The earth will revolve around the sun at an angle direction because, for the most of years, the Earth’s axis is tilted either away or towards the sun. It means that the light will fall unequally and the sun’s warmth on the northern and southern halves of the planet.

During the spring Equinox, the orbit and Earth Axis lined up so that they both get an equal amount of sunlight. The word Equinox comes from two words which are Latin words that mean equal night and equal. So that’s why on the equinox, day and night will last almost the same amount of time. Although, one may get some extra minutes and it will depend on where you are on the planet.

The spring equinox landed on March 21 today at 5:24 pm Eastern time.

What are two kinds of springs?

The two kinds of springs are the Astronomical and Meteorological seasons. The Meteorological seasons are controlled by the weather. They will break down the year into three months of seasons and it is based on the annual temperature cycle.  According to the calendar, spring already started on March 1 and it will go on May 31.

On the other hand, the Astronomical season depend on the earth when it moves around the sun.

What do you expect when spring is here?

For people who live in the north of the equator, the daylight will keep stretching longer including earlier and later sunsets until the summer solstice become in June. The signals of the new seasons are warmer weather, migrating animals, and budding plants.

The southern Hemisphere will watch from the opposite and the days will keep getting short as half of the planet heads out of autumn and into summer.

According to the US government of the national outlook for the season, this spring season will be expected to bring wet weather and it will continue to ease the lack of conditions in the western part of the country. The flood risk also arises if melting snowpack brings in the Midwest.

Most of the Eastern and Southern US might see warmer than actual temperatures this spring. On the other hand, the parts of the Great Basin and northern Plains will similarly be chillier than average.
