SCOTUS Denies Request To Consider Climate Lawsuits
The U.S. Supreme Court has opted not to consider appeals regarding state and local lawsuits aimed at oil companies that seek financial restitution for damages associated with climate change.
Critics contend that these lawsuits promote anti-fossil fuel agendas and could result in substantial financial liabilities, ultimately impacting consumers adversely.
O.H. Skinner, representing the Alliance for Consumers, cautioned that these legal actions might increase expenses for consumers and facilitate a transition towards the Green New Deal via judicial mandates. A coalition comprising 19 states has initiated a constitutional challenge against these lawsuits, which utilize state nuisance laws to target energy firms.
The Biden administration has maintained that the cases are not yet suitable for Supreme Court examination, while detractors assert that they are driven by undisclosed funding from progressive organizations seeking to impose regulations on the energy sector.
