Many individuals have pondered what constitutes the most excruciating experience for a human being—whether it is a kick to the groin for men or the process of childbirth for women. Recent findings have emerged to address this long-standing debate regarding the most intense natural pain one can endure, and the results may not yield a clear victor.

It appears that mothers who have given birth multiple times often assert that the pain from one specific instance surpasses all others, just as some men contend that a particular condition inflicts greater suffering than a mere kick to the groin. This condition is identified as kidney stones.

Individuals who have endured both experiences frequently express that kidney stones are significantly more painful than childbirth or being struck in the groin. A study has even explored this topic and concluded in favor of kidney stones as the more painful experience.

The research, conducted by Saiful Miah, Charlotte Gunner, Lucy Clayton, Suresh Venugopal, Nigel R Boucher, and Bo Parys, involved 36 male and 23 female participants who completed a questionnaire detailing their age, stone size, and pain rating. The results indicated no statistically significant differences between male and female patients.

Among the male participants, 88.9% reported that kidney stones represented the worst pain they had ever encountered, while 78.2% of female participants echoed this sentiment.

This evidence appears quite conclusive.

Furthermore, insights from medical professionals reinforce these findings. Professor Troy Madsen, an expert in emergency medicine and surgery at the University of Utah, discussed this issue in 2022 during an appearance on the podcast “Who Cares About Men’s Health?” He remarked, “I don’t know that I ever see anyone on a regular basis in the ER who has more pain than a person who’s there with a kidney stone.” He further noted the unmistakable signs of distress in patients suffering from this condition.
