Texas Family Of Four Missing At Sea, After Boat Capsizes In Alaska

A family of four from Texas, who were vacationing in Alaska, is currently unaccounted for at sea. The Coast Guard has ceased search operations following the incident. Their 28-foot aluminum boat capsized near Homer, Alaska, on August 3.

The family members, identified as David Maynard (42), Mary (37), Colton (11), and Brantley (7), were aboard the vessel along with four other individuals when it began taking on water around 7 p.m. A distress call was made, leading to the rescue of four people from a life raft by a boat named Salty Sea, with no reported injuries.

According to the Anchorage Daily News, the Coast Guard initiated a search in an area approximately 16 miles west of Homer Spit. At the time of the capsizing, wave heights were around 2 feet, and wind speeds were below 5 knots, as reported by authorities. The water temperature was estimated to be in the low 50s Fahrenheit.

On August 4, the search efforts were officially suspended around 6 p.m. The Coast Guard had deployed a helicopter, an airplane, a cutter, and two additional vessels to assist in the search. Alaska Wildlife Troopers and volunteer boats also participated in the operation.

The Maynard family hails from Troy, Texas. Mary is employed as a travel nurse, while David manages their children and operates a lawn care business. The boys are known to enjoy soccer and baseball. Reports suggest that the family was in Alaska to visit relatives and friends. They have established a GoFundMe page to assist with “unexpected expenses that the family would have to cover so suddenly,” and they have successfully raised nearly $11,000 towards their $10,000 goal. The message conveys, “The Maynards are more than just friends; they are family to me and many others. By now, many of us are aware of the heartbreaking news. For those who may not be informed, this beloved family of four tragically went missing at sea during their vacation in Alaska. Mary’s parents remain there, holding onto hope of bringing them home. This family is enduring an incredibly difficult time. We kindly request your prayers and, if possible, donations to assist with the unforeseen expenses that the family must now face.”

Furthermore, “The Maynards have left a profound impact on numerous lives, from the joy they shared with us to the love and familial bonds they fostered. The emptiness they leave behind is beyond words, but I believe that if we unite as a family and community, they will understand the significance they held in our lives.”
