Unlike her peers, she could not wear the fashionable attire that other children enjoyed. Instead, she was forced to choose from adult clothing, further deepening her sense of isolation.

Her feelings of loneliness intensified as she recognized the absence of representation for individuals like herself in literature and media. When overweight characters did appear, they were frequently depicted as stereotypes.

A transformative relationship
The turning point in her life occurred when Amalie, who hails from Denmark, met her husband, Sean, a British national, through an online video game. Their unexpected bond evolved from friendship into a deeper connection.

“My husband Sean and I met 11 years ago while playing a game on the PlayStation,” she explained. “Initially, I assumed he was an older man seeking companionship with a younger woman. However, I soon discovered that he was actually my age.”
Their relationship commenced on a robust basis of dialogue, devoid of immediate judgments regarding physical appearance. Although they had exchanged photographs, it took some time before they engaged in video conversations.

Amalie acknowledged that her insecurities often rendered her self-conscious, even in the early stages. “I could see how overweight I appeared in the pictures, yet he continued to converse with me,” she remarked. “I felt so insecure about myself; I would conceal my double chin. Nevertheless, he remained unfazed—his primary interest was in talking to me.”

Body shaming continues to be a significant issue in contemporary society and ultimately benefits no one. Making individuals feel inadequate and uncomfortable in their own skin does not necessarily inspire positive change. In fact, it can negatively impact their confidence and happiness, potentially worsening existing issues.
