This hole isn’t just for hanging it has many uses

Regardless of the size of a kitchen, a knife remains an essential tool. Notably, nearly all kitchen knives feature a small round hole, the purpose of which is often unknown to many, including myself in the past. After conducting some research, I am pleased to share the findings.

From a physical standpoint, the primary function of the round hole in knives is to “absorb shock.” When utilizing a knife for tasks such as cutting through meat or bones, it experiences significant impact forces. Without a mechanism to distribute this pressure, the blade is prone to breakage, and the grip can become challenging. The small round hole facilitates an even distribution of force between the front and back of the knife, thereby enhancing its durability and longevity.

Moreover, the round hole in the knife serves several intriguing additional purposes. Upon discovering these, you may find that many everyday challenges can be easily addressed.

  1. Storage and Drainage

After utilizing kitchen knives, it is essential to wash them to eliminate grease and stains. However, residual water can remain on the knife post-cleaning. If the knife is placed directly on a wooden cutting board, it may lead to mold growth. Additionally, prolonged exposure to moisture can increase the risk of rust.

In this context, the hole in the knife proves beneficial, allowing for easy hanging. This not only facilitates quick drainage of water, preventing rust, but also contributes to a cleaner and more organized kitchen environment.

  1. Removing the Snail Tail

Snails are considered a delicacy, yet those sold in restaurants often raise concerns regarding hygiene and food safety. Consequently, many individuals opt to purchase fresh snails for home cooking.

However, the process of removing the snail tail can be quite challenging. While some suggest using scissors for this task, it can be time-consuming and labor-intensive, with a risk of injury.
The round hole on the kitchen knife serves several practical purposes as follows:

To remove a snail tail, simply insert it into the round hole and use another knife to strike the exposed portion, allowing for easy extraction of the snail tail.

  1. Seed Removal

During the fall and winter months, many individuals enjoy preparing health-boosting porridges with red dates. This is particularly beneficial for women, as consuming dates is advantageous for overall health.

However, the seeds of red dates are quite hard and challenging to extract. Cutting them directly with scissors often leaves pulp attached to the seeds, which can be both time-consuming and wasteful.

A more efficient method involves utilizing the round hole on the knife. Place the red date on a cutting board and press the top of the fruit through the hole. Then, simply pull out the seed with your hand, and the task is complete.

  1. Assistance in Mincing Meat

When a meat grinder is unavailable, one must resort to slicing and mincing “vegetarian” meat. However, meat slicers can be quite heavy, and prolonged use may lead to fatigue in the hands.

Here is a helpful suggestion: take a chopstick and insert it through the small hole on the date. By holding the knife in one hand and the chopstick in the other, the process of mincing meat becomes significantly easier. Even after continuous chopping for half an hour, your wrist will remain comfortable.
