Toby Keith could ‘barely sing’ and was ‘shaking’ in one of last ever performances – his wife couldn’t hold back her tears

The country music community experienced a profound loss in 2024 with the death of Toby Keith, who succumbed to stomach cancer after a courageous fight.

At the age of 62, Keith was diagnosed with the illness in 2021 and subsequently underwent six months of treatment. Despite his remarkable resilience and commitment to battling the disease, the celebrated artist, known for his hit “How Do You Look Me Now?”, passed away on the evening of February 5, 2024.

His passing reverberated throughout the music industry and among his extensive fan base, many of whom had been fervently hoping for his recovery.

In June 2022, Toby Keith publicly disclosed his diagnosis via an Instagram post, sharing that he was undergoing a combination of chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery, and that he intended to take a break from his career to focus on his family. Keith expressed his eagerness to spend time with his family while assuring fans, “But I will see the fans sooner than later. I can’t wait.” Nevertheless, his dedication to music remained unwavering. In September 2023, he delivered one of his final performances, singing “Don’t Let the Old Man In” at the People’s Choice Country Awards at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville.

The effort required for this performance did not go unnoticed by his supporters. One fan remarked, “Did you see him shaking? He fought hell to sing that song. And he nailed it.” Another suggested that his trembling could be attributed to “medication side effects or nerves…or both.”

In attendance at the event was Keith’s wife, Tricia, who appeared deeply moved as she watched her husband perform.

After receiving the Country Icon Award during the same ceremony, Keith delivered a humorous acceptance speech, quipping, “I bet you never thought y’all’d see me in skinny jeans.” Towards the end of the previous year, Keith had…
