Track And Field Star, 19, Dies Taking Nap After Competition

Track and field athlete Natalie Black has tragically passed away unexpectedly while resting after a competition.
The 19-year-old was a sophomore at Belhaven University in Jackson.
She had just returned from Clinton, where her college’s track and field team participated in their inaugural outdoor meet of the season.
The talented athlete had an impressive performance at the event, setting a new personal best in the triple jump with a leap of 11.01 meters, securing second place.
Tytavia Hardy, the graduate assistant coach for Black’s team, remarked to WLBT, “She nearly knocked me over with her celebration.”
Her father, Toiwarn Black, expressed, “She was determined to make me proud, and she certainly did.”
Butch Ard, her head coach, noted, “She approached me with confidence, saying, ‘I know you saw that, coach.’ I replied, ‘I certainly did.’”
Following the heartbreaking news of the young athlete’s death, many have taken to social media to pay their respects.
One individual commented: “Natalie Black and her family – she was an extraordinary athlete, and her legacy will endure! My heartfelt condolences; sending love and light.”
Another added: “My thoughts and prayers are with her family, and I will continue to pray for her teammates.”
A third person expressed, “It’s so tragic to witness such a vibrant young life come to an end. My thoughts are with her family during this sorrowful time.”
Formeka Black shared a reflection on her final day with her daughter on Facebook: “We had a wonderful last day together on Saturday. From morning until night, we enjoyed every moment… she was so joyful!
“That smile! She achieved her best triple jump record ever, surpassing her personal best!”
A statement from the Mississippi Track and Field Youth Club conveyed: “We are profoundly saddened by the loss of Natalie Black, a true champion in the realm of Track & Field.
“Her exceptional talent, unwavering determination, and sportsmanship inspired many, both on and off the field.
“Natalie’s significant contributions to the sport will always be cherished, and her legacy will continue to motivate future generations.”
Family, friends, coaches, and teammates of the track star gathered for a candlelit vigil at Belhaven’s outdoor track to pay tribute to Black’s life.
During this poignant gathering, attendees were encouraged to share their cherished memories of the 19-year-old. The event concluded with everyone completing a lap around the field in honor of her passion for athletics.
Her father expressed, “Being here with all these people who loved and cared for my daughter is truly incredible; it’s a wonderful experience to witness and feel the love.”
The news of Black’s passing came as a profound shock to those who knew her.
After celebrating her victory at the season’s first track meet, the young athlete returned home and chose to take a nap on the couch following her exhausting day.
Her mother recounted, “Later that night, while still celebrating with family, she simply laid down for a short nap and never woke up.”
Toiwarn also remarked, “I thank God. There was no suffering. He granted us that much grace!”
The official cause of Black’s death has yet to be disclosed.
