Warning issued to anyone who thinks they have ‘chapped lips’ as the weather turns colder A dentist has warned there could be a more concerning cause behind having ‘chapped lips’

A dentist has issued a caution to individuals experiencing chapped lips, indicating that there may be an underlying infection that requires attention.

The winter season brings with it several inconveniences, including reduced daylight, the prevalence of influenza, and for many, the frequent issue of dry or chapped lips. Some individuals may find that despite applying lip balm consistently, their condition does not improve.

Dr. Joyce Kahng, the proprietor of Orange and Magnolia Dental Studio in California, responded to a video featuring a man expressing his discomfort regarding sores at the corners of his mouth. Initially attributing his pain to cold weather, he was informed that it might actually stem from a fungal infection.

Known on Instagram as @joycethedentist, Dr. Kahng stated, “This could actually be angular cheilitis.” She elaborated, explaining that bacteria and yeast can infiltrate small cracks, leading to an infection. “This is why no matter how much chapstick you use, it is not going to fix anything, and it’s not addressing the root of the issue.”

Dr. Kahng identified two potential causes: Staphylococcus bacteria and Candida yeast.

Fortunately, she provided two recommendations for addressing the issue. “If it’s caused by yeast, you can obtain over-the-counter Clotrimazole. However, if the cause is bacterial, a prescription antibiotic ointment is advisable. Seal it all in with Vaseline – not chapstick!”

Additionally, Dr. Kahng cautioned against the common habit of licking the corners of the mouth, which many individuals resort to when experiencing dryness. She clarified, “People think the saliva is re-moisturizing the area, but it’s actually the opposite and exacerbates the problem.”

Moreover, she noted that there are instances of more chronic cases of angular cheilitis, which may arise from various underlying factors.
Nutritional deficiencies, particularly in iron and vitamin B12, may be contributing factors.

If you are experiencing only mild dryness during the winter season, the application of a lip balm is likely to provide significant relief.

However, if you suspect a more serious underlying issue, addressing one of these two infections may be necessary to resolve the problem permanently.
