Why this female worker wants to ditch her shirt

A female landscaper in Sydney, Australia, has ignited a significant discussion on social media by highlighting what she perceives as a glaring double standard in the workplace: why are men permitted to work shirtless in the heat while women are not?

“It’s a scorching 40-degree day today…”
Many are familiar with the challenges of working outdoors under the intense sun. Those who have endured a sweltering day on a construction site or while on the road can certainly relate.

During my youth, it was common to observe road and construction workers without shirts on hot days. Although this practice may not be as prevalent today, it is still not uncommon to see men laboring with sunburned shoulders exposed.

Shianne Fox, an Australian tradeswoman known as “The Bikini Tradie” on social media, expressed her discontent on TikTok after being prohibited from removing her shirt while working outside on a blistering 104°F (40°C) day. “It’s a scorching 40-degree day today, and I am the one required to keep my shirt on, while all the men on-site are free to go without theirs,” she exclaimed, adding:

“It’s a double standard, it’s sexist, and I am genuinely fed up with it. I simply want to be topless like the men—but no, I will ‘distract them.’”

Fox, who frequently dons a bikini top due to the extreme heat, emphasized her desire for equal treatment akin to her male counterparts, referred to as “tradies” in Australian slang, which denotes skilled workers in various trades such as carpentry, plumbing, or electrical work.

Is this a confrontation over gender equality or an overreach? Fox, who has been engaged in male-dominated trades for over four years and typically wears a bikini while performing her duties, asserts that she is comfortable in her own skin and sees nothing inappropriate about her request.
Foxx contended that working without a top should not be deemed “distracting,” as it is a “natural thing.” Nevertheless, critics emphasized that societal norms and workplace standards are established for valid reasons, asserting that professionalism should take precedence over individual comfort.

“It was an extremely hot day. Naturally, in this industry, many of the men work without their shirts. I believed it was only fair for me to do the same. I have no qualms about exposing my breasts.”

“I don’t believe it should be considered ‘distracting’ because, ultimately, they are simply a natural aspect of our bodies. We all possess breasts; it is a natural occurrence. If someone is going to be immature and think they are distracting, then perhaps they need to mature,” she stated to News.au.com.

Fox, who also shares content on an adult platform, acknowledges that her viewpoint may be contentious but hopes that voicing her opinion will inspire more women to enter the trades.

“I thought that by putting myself out there, I might encourage other women to pursue careers in this industry,” she remarked.

Reactions from other women
Not all female tradespeople support her perspective. Numerous women in the field believe that her social media presence, which includes videos of her working in a bikini top, undermines their credibility.

One female tradeswoman remarked:

“She does not represent us female tradespeople.”

Another added:

“She tarnishes the image of genuine female tradespeople.”
Fox’s video garnered thousands of comments, with many men expressing agreement with her position.

“Absolutely agree—show off the assets and disregard the opinions of men,” one man commented.

“I doubt anyone would object, miss,” another remarked.

However, some remained unconvinced:

“Surely there’s air conditioning in the kitchen,” one critic quipped.

The broader context
As the debate surrounding Fox continues, it is important to recognize that women are still significantly underrepresented in blue-collar occupations.

A 2023 Deloitte survey indicated a striking 12:1 ratio of men to women in trade roles. Given such a substantial gender disparity, Fox’s viral moment highlights the ongoing challenges faced by women in this sector.
Ms. Foxx expressed her satisfaction with her work in predominantly male sectors, despite the existing gender disparity.

“Many individuals claim that catcalling is a common occurrence, but my experience has been quite different,” she clarified.

“In my view, if you enter these environments with confidence and refuse to allow men to dominate the situation, you can maintain your position.”

“Assert yourself. They will not challenge you.”
