Woman Turns Boeing Plane Into Fully Functional Home
In the growing movement towards unconventional housing solutions, such as buses and shipping containers, Jo Ann Ussery’s conversion of a retired Boeing 727 into a luxurious residence is particularly noteworthy. Following the destruction of her home in Benoit, Mississippi, in 1993, financial limitations prompted her to explore alternative living arrangements. Her brother-in-law, who worked as an air traffic controller, suggested the idea of residing in an aircraft.
Ussery purchased the Boeing 727 for $2,000 and subsequently invested approximately $30,000 to transform the aircraft into an opulent living space. The renovated 138-foot interior featured three bedrooms, a kitchen, a living room, and a laundry area. Notably, the cockpit was ingeniously repurposed into a master bathroom, complete with a soaking tub that provided a unique sensation of floating in midair.
Ussery inhabited her airplane home from 1995 until 1999, after which she converted it into a museum. Unfortunately, a transportation accident caused significant damage to the plane. Nevertheless, Ussery’s innovative dwelling continues to serve as a remarkable example of creativity and resilience.
