Sitting in front of a bright computer screen all day isn’t good for your eyes. Fortunately, Apple makes it simple to dim your Mac’s screen and flip the colors in a variety of applications. Here’s all you need to know about enabling Dark Mode on your Mac and quickly switching back to Light Mode.
How to Enable Mac Dark Mode
To enable Dark Mode on a Mac, go to the top-left corner of your screen and click the Apple logo. Then, in the pop-up box, select System Preferences and click the General button. Finally, to enable Dark Mode, click Dark or Auto.
- In the top-left corner of your Mac’s screen, click the Apple logo.
- Then click on System Preferences.
- Select General next.
- Finally, choose Dark. This is located near the top of the window, just to the right of Appearance. You can also choose Auto, which will set your screen to Dark Mode at night and Light Mode during the day.
When you enable Dark Mode on your Mac, only select applications, like as Safari, Mail, Maps, Notes, and others, will become dark. Third-party programs will not have access to Dark Mode.
Some websites may have Dark Mode activated if you use Safari to browse the internet, but only if they are designed for it. Otherwise, you must install an extension to enable Dark Mode on your browser.
Switching Between Light and Dark Modes
By activating the Control Center in the top-right corner of your screen, you may instantly switch between Light Mode and Dark Mode on your Mac. Then, under Display, choose Dark Mode or Light Mode.
- On your Mac, launch the Control Center. Click the icon that looks like two slider buttons stacked on top of each other to do so. This icon will appear in the upper-right corner of your screen.
Note: You will not see the Control Center icon unless you have upgraded to macOS Big Sur.
- Then click the Display button. You want to click anywhere inside the box but not the slider.
- Finally, you can toggle Dark Mode on and off.
How to Make Your Mac Even Darker
To make your Mac darker, pick Display from the Control Center menu in the top-right corner of your screen. Then select Dark Mode and Night Shift to enable them both. While Dark Mode inverts the colors of specific apps, Night Shift changes the hue of your screen from blue to yellow.
Display Preferences is also available at the bottom of the pop-up window. Then, choose Night Shift and move the Color Temperature slider all the way to the left. This reduces the quantity of blue light emitted by your screen, which aids in eye strain, especially while reading text at night.
You can also set a timetable for when Night Shift goes on and off from this page.
