What is an ESD wrist strap?

An anti-static wristband is an important piece of safety equipment that helps to prevent static energy from accumulating near sensitive electronics or other projects where static charge could damage devices or cause safety hazards.


The wrist strap is frequently used in conjunction with an anti-static mat or other sort of work place covering. To safely discharge static electricity, special, highly conductive threads on the wrist strap connect to a ground conductor.

An electrostatic discharge (ESD) wrist strap is another name for an anti-static wrist strap.

When should I wear my ESD wrist strap?

A wrist strap is a conductive wristband that offers an electrical connection to the skin of an operator, then connected to a recognized ground point at a workstation or tool. While a wrist strap does not prevent the creation of charges, its aim is to disperse these charges to the ground.


Wrist straps are important for sitting employees since some people elevate both feet off the ground while seated. They are not required if an operator wears two-foot grounders and does not elevate both heels/toes simultaneously.

What is ESD protection?

Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Protection is a prerequisite of EMC Immunity (Electro Magnetic Compatibility). It is the ability of equipment to work properly in its electromagnetic environment by giving limits to the reception of electromagnetic energy that could cause bodily harm.

What is the resistance value of the ESD Safe wristband?

According to industry requirements (ANSI/ESD S20.20), a wrist strap must have a resistance of fewer than 35 megohms. Anything above that will result in a “high fail” signal from the ESD tester. Excess voltage may build up on the body and produce an ESD incident if the resistance of a wrist strap is too high. The high failure rate may be caused by:

  1. Skin resistance is high (have the operator use an electronics-approved lotion).
  2. a soiled or improperly fitted wristband (check that the band is snug and not overly worn).
  3. The coiled cable is broken. The wire within the cord may have been damaged.

What is the ESD wrist strap made of?

The flexible, elastic crochet fabric with a conductive inner lining and non-conductive outer lining enables full wrist contact. Interwoven silver conductive strands provide optimum conductivity while minimizing skin discomfort.

Accordingly, for secure adjustments, the Premium Wrist Strap features a “flip and grasp” buckle. The buckle is constructed of static-free nylon and has a hypoallergenic plastic rear plate and a 4mm stud. The wrist strap and cord systems from ACL provide one to five pounds of breakaway force.

How do you prevent wrist straps from damage?

Wrap the strap over your wrist and fasten it with a snap or Velcro. The metal on the rear of the wrist strap must always be in touch with your fresh.
